Sometimes a good law and a good book can help. The good law helping with funeral cost is the funeral rule. A good book helping with funeral cost is “Rest in Peace”.-Your funeral Guy.

As someone who has faced the unexpected death of a young family member, I can’t stress enough the importance of this book.

R. Brian Burkhardt provides what no one else will: an insider’s look inside the funeral business. Your funeral director will not tell you about “The Funeral Rule“, enacted in the early 1980′s to protect consumers from unfair practices when purchasing a funeral and funeral related items. R. Brian explains it all. With both steely-eyed pragmatism and a heart of compassion he takes you through all of the important decisions you will be faced with, whether you are pre-arranging or are facing an unexpected loss.
You may be surprised to learn that you can have a funeral the way you want it for a lower cost than you expected. I learned that there are many options available that I wasn’t aware of. Our family used one of the touching examples of real-life funerals that R. Brian recounts: We played “I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me at my daughter-in-law’s gravesite, and it was very, very moving. I’m so glad that we included it.

So you did not make the funeral director play by the funeral rule(s)

So you did not make the funeral director play by the funeral rule(s)

This is an important reference book which belongs in every home, as well as in every church library and in the hands of every hospital chaplain/social worker.

No Lower Cost Funeral here: Illinois Funeral Homes and consumers Whipsawed!

The Preneed Scandals with the Illinois Funeral Directors Association and the National Prearranged Services (NPS) have caused Illinois Funeral Directors to be whipsawed.

This has happened to hundreds of Funeral Homes across the state. From the IFDA itself on Merrill Lynch take over as trustee of the IFDA Preneed Trust.

“We are hopeful that a plan can be fashioned to restore earnings to funeral directors over the long term.”–Earnings from the IFDA Preneed Trust have proven a great loss to funeral directors in the State of Illinois.

With the new valuation “mark to market” in the Merrill Lynch agreement. The loss of preneed commissions to funeral directors is quite high.  You can be quite sure that the cost in traditional funerals is being passed on to  Illinois consumers.

The funeral homes in Illinois who went with  NPS/Lincoln definetly were whipsawed as well. The funeral home owners here are receiving no commissions from these folks and may be a good portion of the folks funerals as well. This according to a preneed lawyer. It is more than obvious that these costs also go to the consumer looking for a lower cost funeral.

Have Illinois funeral purchasers been whipsawed by these scandals? It appears so.
