Now Even Unions are telling you to Save on Funeral Cost. In This union publication it seems that they have taken a page out of Rest In Peace  Insiders Tips to the Low Cost Less Funeral.

The theme in this Union Article of- Shopping around, Choosing  Cremation, and buying Your casket  online is the   mantra of Your Funeral Guy Blogs and Book.

Snippet:

1. Do your homework and compare costs. This is much easier to do if the passing of the deceased was expected, but you could call ahead and ask for a price list from funeral homes.

2. Explore cremation as an option. The cost of embalming can be eliminated if completed soon after death, and you have the right to buy an inexpensive container as opposed to a pricey casket.

3. Purchase the casket on your own, outside the funeral home. These days, caskets are available through the Internet, funeral supply stores, and even Walmart.com. All carry caskets at reduced prices, and funeral directors are required by law to accept them and not charge extra fees to do so.

Colorado: Home Funerals, SCI, fight over licensing of Funeral Directors.

Colorado: Home Funerals, SCI, fight over licensing of Funeral Directors.

Colorado Licensing of funeral directors and Crematory operators as well as Home Funerals have been in the news lately. These stories are  happening both in the Colorado Media  and the New York Times.

In Colorado the State may past a licensing law for funeral directors. The waters on this are turning to blood. SCI (Service Corporation International)and Lisa Carlson are pulling strings behind the scenes. View on the Web

Are licenses needed for funeral directors? Colorado has not had them since 1982. There actually seems to be less problems, and less scandals than other parts of the country.

This does not compute. Licenses are supposed to keep people honest. This does not seem to be the case of late.

Funeral Directors in Illinois brought a lawsuit against the Illinois Funeral Directors Association.

Funeral Directors in Illinois brought a lawsuit against the Illinois Funeral Directors Association.

The list of six Funeral Homes- Funeral Directors have been made available on the Internet. Your Funeral  Guy’s opinion is that the list of six who sued the IFDA should be avoided. Here is why; If they did not exercise due dilligence with their own funeral preneed funds, how can they be trusted with your funeral money?

The Illinois Funeral Directors missapplied preneed funds for their own Ponzi Scheme and for personal purposes. Read the Lawsuit from 6 funeral directors here. In fact the ones bringing the Lawsuit may be just as bad as the Illinois Funeral Directors Association and their ponzi scheme.

So if you find yourself negotiating with these folks on a lower cost funeral be sure to have your body armor on.

I see no evidence that these folks have contacted folks with non guaranteed policies aboud there losses in the IFDA Trust accounts.

For now these Funeral Homes are listed. Commentary will come in another post.

The Lower Cost Funeral book has been featured in an Article in the Canadian National Post. The article “Don’t Throw Your Money Down the Grave, make sure your family mourns you not the cost of your funeral.”

Here is what I said in my interview that was quoted in the article.

“In any other transaction this large, most people would try bargaining on the price. But when it comes to burying a friend or relative, no one wants to seem cheap. That kind of thinking, however noble it might seem, is a mistake, says R. Brian Burkhardt, author of Rest in Peace: Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral.Quite frankly, the money should go for the living,” says Mr. Burkhardt. “Why should you put $15,000 in the ground for a funeral when the money can go to your grandkid’s education or to a relative?”

People shouldn’t be shy about opting for a low-cost funeral, especially in this economy, adds Mr. Burkhardt.

If you take away all the emotion from the situation, it is a contract negotiation. Funeral directors will negotiate with you for a lower cost,” Mr. Burkhardt says.

For example, he says, you can opt not to have the body embalmed. “That is the best way to lower funeral costs,” he says. “It can save you at least $600 or $700.”

The Memorial Society of British Columbia estimates the average funeral costs to be $10,000.Your Funeral Guy, R.Brian Burkhardt, estimates the average cost of a traditional funeral in 2008  in the United States to be $8000 USD. This due to traditional funeral cost rise as lower cost options cut into funeral industry profits.

Funeral Directors do not always tell you about the Lower Cost Funeral.

They may try steer you away.

Funeral Homes often do not always tell you the truth about funeral cost. Many times they try to get you to prepay for a funeral and get you a thinking you are saving money when instead they are taking the Interest on your money. The Illinois Funeral Directors Association has a 40 million dollar deficit in their fund. the State of Illinois has taken away the Illinois Funeral Directors Association to manage the fund.

Here is a part of letter from a chain of active prepayment funeral homes in Central Illinois.

http://www.calvertmemorial.com/web/?link=planning

At first glance the sales letter is pretty persuasive.

“:: Advanced Planning Saves Your Family Money
Today’s funeral costs less than you might expect, but the costs do continue to rise. You can stop increasing prices by several prepayment options, locking your costs at today’s prices.

:: Advanced-Planning Makes Sense
If you were leaving in the morning for a two-week vacation, and you found a cancellation notice for your homeowner’s insurance in the mail, most likely you would get a new policy in place before you left. Most people would, even though there’s only a one in 80,000 chance they might lose their home to fire. Yet most of us haven’t given serious consideration to making funeral plans – when the chance of dying sometime in the future is one in one. We often plan for the improbable – planning for the inevitable simply makes sense.” ” THIS IS THE DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE CALVERT HOMES WEBSITE” ( Calvert Metzler Funeral Home)THIS IS THEIR WORDS”

The last two paragraphs of the letter are deceptive. Important information is left out.

“You can stop increasing prices by several prepayment options, locking your costs at today’s prices.” This is true but left out is the fact that the “Funeral Home Owner” and the “Prepaid Insurance Company” take most if not all the interest on your money you give them.

The last paragraph is “::Advance Planning Makes Sense” is subtle and deceptive. Funeral Insurance and Fire Insurance is not an apples to apples comparison.

This is a persuasive letter for prepayment of funerals. It strategically leaves out “What happens to your money” and purposely compares apples to oranges to deceive and scare you.

In the book Rest in Peace Insiders Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral by Matt Bacak and R Brian Burkhardt these deceptions are exposed and you are given tools to negotiate these situations away.

Your Funeral Guy, Author, Funeral Director State of Illinois.

Your Funeral Guy strongly encourages you to pre-plan your funeral but not prepay. It is your money not the funeral directors money.

Your Funeral Guy is being asked to name names in the IFDA Preneed Trust Mismanagment or scandal. He is only providing names that are a part of the public record, and names available on the internet that are connected to prepayment of funerals. He urges all interested parties to contact the Illinois Funeral Directors Association for the exact details of the 40,000,000 deficit.
